Pros And Cons Of Constructing A Metal Building

Posted on

Many people have been exploring alternative construction materials in recent times. Wood structures, despite the tradition, have a few too many problems that make them unreliable in many environments. One of the alternatives that have risen to prominence in recent times are buildings made from metals. Metals have shown that they can succeed where wood failed, but just how good are these buildings?

Pros of Metal

If you're considering metal, some of the reasons why you'll want to go for this option include:

  1. Durability: This is one of wood's weakest points. Without regular maintenance, wood will easily fall victim to the elements and to insects. Metal, on the other hand, can take physical damage and have fewer maintenance needs than wood structures.

  2. Faster construction: Putting up metal buildings is a faster process that can take just a few weeks. This is because many of the frames are premade and only need assembly.

  3. Eco-Friendly: Much of the steel that is used in metal houses is recycled. Additionally, the material used for insulation by many companies is eco-friendly and some of the insulating systems used in these houses are the best around.

Cons of Metal

As good as metal is as a construction material, it does have its flaws. These include:

  1. Corrosion: In the right environment, steel will corrode at an accelerated rate. This can make steel a poor material in tropical environments unless it's treated regularly.

  2. Pricier than wood: The steel frames used in these houses cost more than those used in typical wood structures.

  3. Low customizability: Many companies that make steel buildings do little to no customization. The frames are usually premade for certain types of houses and customizing will cost you more.

Is Metal Right for You?

Despite its downsides, metal is definitely a material you should be considering for your home. Problems such as corrosion are being tackled every year with more corrosion resistant steel being used and the issue of customizing the houses will be remedied with the advancement in manufacturing methods.

In tropical environments or areas near the sea, saltwater is a genuine problem. However, this is not to say that it is impossible to have a steel house in such a place. There are treatments that can be done to protect the metal. You can also consult with a professional to get the low-down on the various types of metal buildings that you can get.
